Re-formation

by Sonya Pendrey

Wheat is wheat, Van Gogh wrote. I joined a coven recently, started working retail. My cycle synced with uterined colleagues before onboarding completed. “I'm investing in myself,” customers grin and purchase three-hundred-dollar sweaters. Sometimes I process a return and the refund issues to three different cards. Wheat is wheat, Van Gogh wrote, even if people think it is grass in the beginning. Invest early, they say. That Burberry Goddess commercial goes, “There is a goddess in all of us. Strong as a lioness.” Emma, a barefoot brunette, sprints, flanked by a pride of large carnivores. Before I was a shopgirl, I was pregnant. Between Bob’s Burgers episodes, Emma would run, then press up onto a rock to power pose at the setting sun over the savanna. The ad ends, “Embrace the power within.” I miscarried. Emma, has your body been through this, too? Months later, I’m still taking homeopathic medications, managing strange smells and pains, while starting again, again. Gradual gain over a lifetime is a guarantee, they say. Invest early. Wheat is wheat, Van Gogh wrote, even if people think it is grass in the beginning. If I am to be worth anything later, I am worth something now.
